BBC says RIP to TOTP By NADIA BROOKS Sun Online
TOP of the Pops has been axed after 42 years providing the latest pop performances and chart rundowns.
The final episode of the BBC music show, which made stars of Noel Edmonds and Jimmy Savile, is expected to air later this summer.
Audiences have deserted the show in droves since its 70s heyday, when it was watched by 19 million viewers.
Viewing figures dropped even more when it switched from BBC1 to BBC2 last year.
A number of relaunches and a succession of presenters have failed to revive the flagging format.
A BBC spokesman said: "The decision to bring the show to an end after 42 years has not been taken lightly and over the past few years every effort has been made to maintain the quality and distinctiveness of the show."
He continued: "Over recent years the show has faced ever increasing competition from multimedia and niche musical outlets which enable viewers to consume music of their choice any time night or day in a way that Top of the Pops simply can’t deliver in its current weekly format."
The first episode of Top of the Pops was broadcast on New Year's Day in 1964 from a disused church in Salford.
Host Jimmy Savile introduced performances by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield and the Hollies.
It switched to BBC2 after the latest high-profile relaunch failed to boost ratings.
Rebranded as ‘All New Top of the Pops’, it was hosted by MTV presenter Tim Kash.
He was later replaced by Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates.
In its new Sunday teatime slot on BBC2, audiences fell as low as 1 million viewers.
The show has been under pressure on all fronts such as 24-hour music channels and the decline of singles chart.
BBC director of television Jana Bennett said: "We’re very proud of a show which has survived 42 years in the UK and gone on to become a worldwide brand but the time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion."

its a good thing and a bad thing that they're ending it. GOOD: ratings were going back up, it was becoming more popular so now it will be axed on a little high rather than nobody watching it. BAD: its the end of an era for the bbc and radio one. this new cduk needs to perform well otherwise it will be the end of this type of telly alltogether

even when it did relaunch, it slowly reverted back to how it was anyway. take the last big relaunch for example, the more "exclusive" look at the charts. within 6 weeks, it was back to showin the new chart performances and the odd exclusive

i think it could have worked in a different timeslot with a decent host say Cat Deeley ;D and if they focused on an older audience and the album chart maybe like Jools Holland's show does
That's the best live music show now

if they wanted 2 switch it to bbc 2 they should have kept it at 7:30 on Fridays im sure the bbc1 audience would have switched to bbc2 and kept the same ratings which would have been gud 4 bbc2
