Channel 4 axes Popworld By LEIGH HOLMWOOD April 27, 2007 COMMENT ON THIS STORY
CHANNEL 4 is to axe T4's flagship music show Popworld after six and a half years.
The show, which launched the careers of original presenters Simon Amstell and Miquita Oliver, will end in July.
Amstell went on to host BBC2 music quiz Never Mind the Buzzchickens while Oliver now presents T4.
They were replaced by DJ Alex Zane and ex-model Alexa Chung last year.
Channel 4 said it would now look to create a new music show.
"Channel 4 has decided not to recommission Popworld,” a spokesman confirmed.
"The show has performed very successfully over this period but we are keen to continue to use our T4 platform as a launch pad for new music formats that reflect our audience's tastes and the way in which they consume music."
The early-morning weeked show established a strong reputation for itself with its witty interviews and links.
It also carried the Arctic Monkeys' first TV interview.
A recently launched spin-off weekly magazine, Popworld Pulp, closed after just two issues last week.
Popworld is the latest TV music show to be dropped, following BBC1’s Top of the Pops and ITV1’s CD:UK.
Five was looking at resurrecting CD:UK but eventually ditched the idea.
