Duo ... Ant and Dec have won the nation's hearts The perfect couple By CLAIRE BRAND
AS presenters of hit shows such as I'm A Celebrity and Saturday Night Takeaway, Ant and Dec are the darlings of the showbiz world.
The cheeky Geordie duo have come a long way since landing their first big TV jobs when they were both just 15.
This three-part series, examining high-profile celebrity pairings, kicks off with the rise of Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, now both 30.
Their successful relationship began when they met on the set of kids' drama Byker Grove, playing PJ and Duncan, in the early Nineties.
"I disagreeistant told me there was a very insistent boy waiting to see me, who was a bit too chickeny for his own good," recalls Matthew Robinson, who directed the show.
Then ... lads in Byker Grove
"He sounded perfect so I invited him to the audition that was Declan Donnelly's introduction to Byker Grove."
Ant and Dec soon won the hearts of viewers. "Their fan mail used to come in on an open-back truck," recalls co-star David Oliver, 29, who played Marcus Bewick. "Mine came in on a tea tray!"
In a shocking storyline, Ant¹s character PJ was blinded when a paintballing outing went wrong.
"It's partly my fault Ant's character went blind," says Dale Meeks, 31, who starred as Greg and now plays Simon Meredith in Emmerdale. "I rushed over to Ant. He had all these yellow streaks down his face!"
